When i press "M" to open the map, part of it isn't visible (covered in grey), how do I uncover this?

Ok, I'm feeling rather noobish tonight because I have yet to find a shop or a quest that is giving me any kind of new map so that I can actually see where the heck I'm bouncing around at. Any help or info would be much appreciated, I'm constantly getting lost...
