problem with the wii U in itself is the controller, it already costs $70 for a wiimote and nunchaku combo, last thing I need is the price of a hand held so my friends can play.

Then again, a wireless Xbox 360 controller runs a solid $50 at its original retail price. A Wii controller goes for $40 retail, which is all you need to play most games anyway, making it slightly cheaper. The price, though, I can still see as being a big setback, but I generally have my friends bring over their own controllers when we use a Wii anyway. That'll probably be an effective way of getting around that. I don't generally play games with my family anyway, so I'll probably be able to avoid this call personally.
(And Nintendo could always be smart about it and allow the 3DS to serve as a controller if they really wanted. Just a little wishful thinking.)

I think this will bring in the casuals, hardcore, and those in the middle ground.
This controller will change the way game are played. The applications are near endless, and with the support of third party developers who'll more than likely make full use of it. I can see it dwarfing many other consoles.

Nintendo knew how to get grannies to play video games. Now they're giving people who enjoy more classic methods of gaming initiative to join in. They know how to give people what they want, put it on a t-shirt and sell it.

Yeah.
It almost feels like Nintendo intentionally kept their hardcores at bay in order to bring in a larger audience for their 'true' next gen console.
<_< Wouldn't that be an fantastic, yet evil, marketing ploy.
>_> But we all know Nintendo doesn't do evil...

Like I said, E3 sucked this year. Everything was expected, Nintendo was a little different than expected. I applaud its diveristy, but mark my words when I say that this next generation will be just like the last generation. Similar to the Wii, the Wii U will sell a lot for the first 4-6 years and then will be left in the dust.
I think Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo enjoyed the last cycle of consoles and will do business the exact same way, except PSN probably wont go down again and there wont be many RRoDs.
Edit: E3 is not over, a GTA 5 or GTA 4(insert subtitle here) would make this a better E3.

I disagree with you on Nintendo. The major problem they had with Wii is the lack of 3rd party titles. They went in on their own pretty much. The fans complained about it, so what are they doing? Adding a crap ton(it seems) of third party support.
This can be a big, and critical move for nintendo, as long as they do online decently, they will own the casual market, and take a good share of the hardcore.

The WiiU controller won't be sold separately and no more than 1 can be used simultaneously on the same console.

And the cool thing about the Wii remotes are the other brands. I've seen a set with a smaller wii remote and the nunchuck in one pack for 40 bucks. I don't know if it's any good or not, but it's there.
On terms of the 3ds being used as a controller, I wouldn't doubt it. I mean think about it, they're releasing Super Smash Bros 4 on both the 3DS and Wii U. So the possibility of them working together is likely.
