I don't think so. This happened to my +7 legendary top. I had to buy a new one. On the bright side, I bought something better, and cheap at the AH.
I hear you should avoid upgrading past 4 on Weapons and 3 on armor. For some reason, it let me go up to 6 on others. I don't know what determines this. Because, some of my items don't go past 3. Some do.

Here is a thread on it. :

Nope, once it's broken its gone.
I highly suggest not going higher than +7~+8 unless you an extremist with alot of cash. The risk vs reward factor holds simply too much of a gap. It personally took me 6 subs broken, and over 10 U42 Purples to get my own sub to +9, and you can just imagine how much that is to upgrade a single equipment. Worth it in the end though, my weapon now carries just as much stat as the average +7 Lv 55.
Of course being, it's only worth doing this on equips that you would'nt care less about, save the ones with godly effects at +7~+8. You most likely won't be find another +17% Melee crit% glove again , so make your decision wisely next time.

Oh. Btw, check my edit.
But, I have a great strategy for getting cash, if interested. It's not difficult at all. I'll post it on your profile so I'm not spamming.

Yes, I was merely setting that as an example. HR and LP should'nt be that much of a loss, so perhaps your lucky there..
Point is, if you do wanna make it past +8 on a weapon, Lv42~46 equips are a way to go since their relatively cheap. Otherwise, +7~+8 will suffice.
Why do I say this? As of the current market, U50~55 advanced stones are extremely overpriced, so their not recommended.

Its easy, you can safely get weapons to +6 without risk, and armor to +4, ive never seen any item break that pattern. and when you think about it, the numbers make sense, 2 weapons to +6 = 12 stones, 3 armor to +4 = 12 stones.
subtract that by 1 to safely try an advanced stone, and with some luck, get a weapon to +8 or gear to +6. im shocked at the number of people i run into that dont know this.

I will be attempting a +15 upgrade shortly with the help of 6 pure stones. We'll see how I go but I think 6 pure stones may not be enough if I'm unlucky.

Guys you can upgrade to +6 with armour and +7 or even +8 (if very lucky) first upgrade to +3 then upgrade with pure stone (on armour )
For weapon upgrade to +5 then use pure stone after that use white stones and normal stones
dont use white stones with pure stones cause if get card broken it downgrade -3 and with normal stones only -1
